3 Alternatives To A Classic G&T

Is there anything better than a gin and tonic? The good old G&T that we can crave come to the end of the week, sometimes day…

With dry January nearly at its dreaded end, and some deciding to finish a few days earlier, we know that the craving for a classic gin and tonic is strong. Those bitters with the smooth taste of juniper are something we understand after all our gin and prosecco bar is something that we have been tempted with for the last month.

But what if you wanted something that was a little different, hitting new flavours, new notes and something that could your signature drink? We have a few different choices that we think cover it off nicely.

The Negroni (Gin, Campari, Vermouth)
They have an international week celebrating this drink so, if you’re a fan of a strong, hearty and comprehensively one of the coolest drinks ever made, then this is for you.

Equal parts gin, vermouth and campari, it has striking colours but more than anything you will be safe in the knowledge that your Italian counterpart is enjoying one of these glorious drinks in a bar somewhere on the peninsula. It is the drink that an Italian bond would drink… forget the Vodka Martini… no shaking required. For those who want a sweeter variety, ask for a Negroni Sbagliato which replaces the vermouth with sparkling white wine or for some, prosecco.

Anthony Bourdain once commented, “it will hit you like a freight train after four or five”. You’ve been warned.

The Old Fashioned (Bourbon or Rye whiskey, Angostura bitters, Sugar cube)

Thanks to gin bars like ours, a lot has been forgotten about the good, Old Fashioned cocktail. One episode of Mad Men will however get you in the mood to try the drink of every ad executive in the 1960s and every man who enjoyed a a rolled cigar since. It’s a way to complement whiskey in the perfect manner, so why not have something that says, “I’m here and I’m chilled.”

A mixture of sugars, bitters and alcohol of choice (usually brandy or whiskey) and topped off with a cherry, it’s the epitome of cool.

Guardian columnist and food writer, Felicity Cloake  wrote, “It is a drink that goes down as well before dinner as after it; one that you’ve almost always got the ingredients for; and which packs just enough punch that one is, sensibly, enough.”

The Cosmpolitan (Lime Juice, Cointreau, Cranberry Juice & Vodka Citron)

If there were ever a drink that represents Sex & The City, it is the Cosmpolitan. Best described as “wanting to be like the cool 90s girl, a writer of sorts – your facebook updates are the talk of the town, you’re an instagrammer dabbling in snapchat for fun” as we heard someone casually say it not that long ago.

Yet the Cosmopolitan is the drink that is actually meant to be savoured. Sit down, relax, kick off your weekend the right way and enjoy what this great mix can be for your evening. It is something that shouldn’t be downed, definitely not!
